What they do

Dental Radiographers in Florida operate dental X-ray equipment to produce diagnostic radiographic images that a dentist uses to detect cavities, periodontal bone loss, impacted teeth, abscesses, and other oral pathology. They work in general dentistry offices, pediatric practices, orthodontic clinics, oral surgery centers, and academic dental institutions. Common tasks include positioning patients and sensors or film, selecting appropriate exposure factors, capturing bitewing, periapical, panoramic, and sometimes cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, and ensuring radiation safety protocols are followed.

In Florida, the role exists primarily to ensure that anyone exposing dental radiographs has completed standardized training in radiation safety, equipment operation, and infection control. Unlike a dental hygienist, a dental radiographer is not authorized to perform scaling, sealant application, or other clinical hygiene services — the certificate is specifically for radiographic imaging. Many dental assistants in Florida hold dental radiographer credentials as part of their employment.

Licensing in Florida

Florida requires that anyone exposing dental radiographs (other than licensed dentists or dental hygienists) complete a Florida Board of Dentistry-approved dental radiography program that meets the curriculum requirements of Florida Administrative Code. Programs include didactic instruction, hands-on laboratory training, and supervised clinical experience. After completing the program and passing the required examinations, the trainee receives a certificate and registers with the Florida Board of Dentistry, which oversees the credential.
