Common tasks include positioning patients and sensors or film, selecting appropriate exposure factors, capturing bitewing, periapical, panoramic, and sometimes cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, and ensuring radiation safety protocols are followed.
In Florida, the role exists primarily to ensure that anyone exposing dental radiographs has completed standardized training in radiation safety, equipment operation, and infection control. Unlike a dental hygienist, a dental radiographer is not authorized to perform scaling, sealant application, or other clinical hygiene services — the certificate is specifically for radiographic imaging. Licensing in Florida
Florida requires that anyone exposing dental radiographs (other than licensed dentists or dental hygienists) complete a Florida Board of Dentistry-approved dental radiography program that meets the curriculum requirements of Florida Administrative Code.
